About Me
As a dedicated social worker, licensed therapist, clinical supervisor, and mental health equity scholar, I bring over 15 years of clinical practice experience and a decade in higher education to my work. Currently serving as Interim MSW Program Director and Associate Professor at North Carolina Central University, I am passionate about educating future social workers while advancing research in mental health equity, particularly focused on culturally responsive approaches to mental health care for African American communities.
My Professional Journey
My academic foundation includes a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, a Master of Science in Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and most recently, a Master of Science in Education focusing on Global Higher Education Management from the University of Pennsylvania. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist (LCAS), I've maintained a commitment to both practice and scholarship throughout my career.
Teaching Philosophy
In my teaching, I strive to create transformative learning experiences that bridge theory and practice. Having taught over 30 different courses across multiple universities including North Carolina Central University, Columbia University, and Simmons University, I emphasize culturally responsive approaches that prepare students to address complex social challenges. I believe in empowering students through active learning, critical thinking, and real-world application.
Research Focus
My research centers on mental health disparities among African Americans, with particular attention to cultural expressions of depression and anxiety in Black women. I've published extensively on topics including somatic symptoms of depression, the intersection of racial identity and mental health, and evidence-based practices for culturally responsive care. My work aims to amplify marginalized voices and advance more equitable mental health outcomes.
Leadership and Service
I believe in giving back to both the profession and community. My service includes roles on editorial boards, professional committees, and community organizations. As a board member for the Legal Defense Fund and Families and Children Rising, I work to address systemic inequities and support vulnerable populations. Within academia, I contribute to advancing our field through service on the CSWE Council on Publication and various university committees.
Personal Approach
I approach my work with compassion, cultural humility, and a commitment to social justice. Drawing on both African-centered frameworks and evidence-based practices, I believe in meeting clients and students where they are while empowering them to achieve their full potential. My integrated approach combines clinical expertise with scholarly rigor, always centered on promoting dignity and equity for all people.
"I am committed to educating culturally responsive practitioners who will create meaningful change in our communities, while advancing research that addresses mental health disparities and promotes healing."
